Letters to Friends I Never Spoke to Again (2020)
Even in a post-social media world, it is not uncommon to experience the total loss of a relationship without an opportunity for closure. Growing up, I attended seven different schools in three different states between kindergarten and twelfth grade, and I had a number of friendships end abruptly between school years. It was in trying and failing to find old friends on social media that I began to plan this project, which was also partially inspired by the novel To All The Boys I've Loved Before by Jenny Han.
In spring of 2020, I posted a social media prompt asking for anonymous letters written to loved ones with whom a relationship was lost without closure. The project was titled Letters to Friends I Never Spoke to Again, and a temporary Tumblr blog was created for it, so letters could be sent anonymously to the blog's inbox. After several months, the letters were hand copied onto Awagami Kitakata paper, distressed, and scanned.
